Chapter 12 - Stake Out (2)

“Wow! How did you get here before me?” Steve asked as he walked up to Ronnie.

“Ha! That’s a funny story, I will tell you and Doug on the way to the pond.” She scanned the yard and the bushes then closed her eyes and listened intently, taking deep rhythmic breaths as she methodically turned her head from side to side.

“What are you doing?” Steve asked.

“I am listening for any visitors we might have.” Ronnie said.

“Oh, sorry… Do you hear anything?” He asked again.

Patiently she smiled “No… I don’t think so at least.”

“Do you want to try again?” Steve asked sheepishly.

“No, anyway I’m sure Doug will know one way or another.” She gave Steve a reassuring smile “Let’s get going. We should stick to the shadows as much as possible. If you see or hear anything just stop moving, don’t say anything, just stop… And try to stay as close to me as possible. Stay in my foot prints if you can.”

“Oh, ok.” Steve knew he did not excel in stealth, actually when it came to doing anything physical he pretty much didn’t excel.

Half way across the yard Ronnie suddenly stopped, only to be tripped over by Steve “Oh, sorry Ronnie. I didn’t…” her hand shot to cover his mouth. They stood frozen for a few seconds before Ronnie started moving again. “What was it?” Steve whispered loudly. Ronnie just held her finger up to her lips and kept moving. It was amazing how none of her steps made a single noise but every one of Steve’s seemed to crash to the ground.

They ended up on the other side of the yard with Doug standing motionless behind the old frog statue. “So you guys made it.”

Once past the yard, and into the first track of woods they all started to relax. Ronnie told her story of Caroline, and both Doug and Steve blushed a little in the darkness. They picked on Steve’s heavy feet, and tried to come up with what they were going to tell a mer-person if they happened to come across one.

“I mean really, we don’t have anything to say.” Ronnie confessed “what are we going to tell them ‘There’s a student in our class that we don’t like who may, or may not know about these ponds and we thought for some reason that you would care’?”

“Well I thought we could just tell them what we knew and hopefully they would be able to fill in the rest.” Doug offered.

They came to the pond and sat down on a log a fair ways away.

“So, do you think if they see us, or hear us, or if we call to them, do you think they will stay or swim away?” Ronnie pondered out loud.

“I really don’t know.” Doug shrugged.
