Chapter 11 - The Plan (2)

The last class of the day, Mythical and Magical Cultures, was wrapping up. Ronnie and Steve were too busy thinking about tonight to be paying much attention to class. Even Doug was distracted by the notion of the mermaid stake-out, mostly he was worried about Steve not getting caught.

“So, as we can see the nymph culture is very much limited by the access to rivers, streams, and tributaries. Does anyone have any questions?” Professor Murine asked.

The class as a whole rumbled as everyone gathered up their bags, no one really expecting any questions. But to Doug’s surprise a clear voice rang out over the ruckus.

“Yes Professor Murine, I do have a question.” Most of the class kept moving but Ronnie, Doug, and Steve all whipped around to see Sara with her hand raised and a sinister look on her face.

“Yes Sara, class please settle down for one more moment, go ahead.”

“Thank you Professor, we have been talking about how the nymphs are land locked, what about the mer-people?” Her eyes were no longer looking at the professor but had settled heavily on Ronnie.

The long pause made it obvious that Professor Murine was not prepared for this particular question and was weighing her answer carefully before she began to speak. The Professors habit of thinking before speaking was one of the things that Doug found most comforting, even when he was just a little kid. The pause gave Doug enough time to face the professor and in a very subtle gesture sign to her the word ‘no’ with a pleading glance.

“Well, what a good question Sara. Actually we will be discussing the mer-people next week so I will save the answer until then. Now everyone have a terrific weekend.”

Sara stayed standing watching, obviously not satisfied with the answer she got. Jason, oblivious as always, opened up his book, flipped a few pages and said “yeah, it looks like the Mer-people can only travel through deep rivers and lakes.” Sara shot him a glare, and rolled her eyes. “What?”

“Don’t you ever pay attention to anything?” She mumbled under her breath as she picked up her bag and turned to leave the room.
