Chapter 11 - The Plan (1)

The weather was cooling off, each morning the frost was a little thicker on the dormitory roofs, and the vibrant colors of the Ohio Autumn were floating to the ground as fall was coming to a close.

“Ok, so after lights out we will meet you at the frog statue by the woods.” Ronnie said, with excitement dripping from her lips.

“Ronnie do you really think this is a good idea?” Steve said as his eyes darted between his two friends. “I mean Doug can get out of his house without having to worry about getting caught…” Steve regretted saying it even before he finished the sentence. “I m-mean, may-maybe…” he stuttered as he tried to figure a way out. He didn’t like the idea of sneaking out of the dorm, traipsing around the woods in the dark, and most importantly he didn’t want to find some strange mer-people who might freak out if they knew they had been discovered. He just wasn’t like Doug and for that matter he wasn’t like Ronnie either. He just didn’t see how this could be a good idea. But at the same time, he didn’t want to disappoint his friends.

“So you think we should just let Doug do it alone?” Ronnie’s voice was sharp.

“N-No! That’s not-not what I mean!” Steve struggled. “I-I just mean, maybe it would make more sense if Doug does a little bit of reconnaissance before we make our move to talk to them… Didn’t you say the last time you tried to find them it took you all summer?” Steve turned to Doug, hoping for a little support.

Doug smiled, he understood. It’s not that Steve didn’t want help, it’s just he was scared, he never did this kind of stuff before he met them. He’d always lived in a very controlled non-magical household where everyone was black and white, where adults were in charge.

“Well yeah, it did take all summer, but that’s because they normally don’t travel in the summer. Spring and fall are the seasons where they move, in the spring they go north, and in the fall they go south. Considering fall is almost over, I think now is the best time to find them,” Doug paused and gave Steve a smile that said sorry and please at the same time “and honestly if we find one, it may be our only opportunity.”

“Oh…” Steve forced a smile out “that makes sense, so yeah you are totally right, we all need to be there… tonight.”

Doug put a reassuring hand on Steve’s shoulder.
