It wasn’t like lights out meant the lights went out. It really just meant everyone to their rooms, once in their rooms, it could be a while before anyone was actually ready to turn the lights out. What was worse the hall statues were sure to rat anyone out whom they caught trying to sneak past. And the statues on the first year’s floor were the most vigilant. The good news, sneaking back in was usually easier because none of them wanted to admit someone had gotten past them. So the answer was simple, don’t go past the statues on the way out.
Steve had it pretty easy, first on most nights his roommate was asleep before his head hit his pillow and second the boy slept like a log, while his constant snoring drowned out any outside noises. So all Steve had to do was open the window and he was good to go.
Ronnie on the other hand, not so easy, she and her roommate would stay up for hours at a time chattering away deep into the night, and neither of them were able to sleep through anything more than a tap without being wide awake. And to make it even worse, they were on the second floor with no way down.
“Caroline?” Ronnie decided to be as straight forward and honest as possible.
“Yeah?”
“You know my friend Doug?” She decided to keep Steve out of this.
“Yeah.”
“Well he wanted to show me something down at the pond tonight…” She paused for a second to come up with a reason why tonight.
“Ohhh really!” Caroline whipped around and looked deep into Ronnie’s eyes.
Ronnie smiled as she realized she didn’t need to make anything up, Caroline had done it for her. Blushing at the idea, Ronnie just answered with a quite “Yes.”
“Well then you better get going!” Caroline immediately turned around and headed to her wardrobe as Ronnie tried to figure out a way to get out without being caught. She headed to the door to see there was anyone in the hall. “No!” Caroline hissed.
Ronnie jerked around and saw Caroline holding a repelling harness and ropes. She could hardly stop laughing long enough to get tied in.
“Now you know how to use one of these things right?”
“Sure, I’ve done it once or twice.” She winked at Caroline, one of the topics that kept them up many a night was climbing, repelling, and base jumping. Although when it came to using equipment Caroline was the expert.
