Chapter 6 - Hair color (1)

“Hey Ronnie…Have you ever noticed Professor Petunia’s hair changes color?” Steve asked as he pondered Prof’s purple do. “It was blue yesterday wasn’t it?” The very vibrant professor of herbology, always wore wild prints, bright colors, and somehow her hair seemed to match each outfit perfectly.

Ronnie giggled a little because she loved to watch the professor’s hair change. “Yeah, I did, actually it changes all the time. I keep trying to figure out if there is any rhyme or reason to it or if it just changes.” She stopped to reflect for a minute. “I think it turns green when she’s mad, and really bright pink when she’s excited… Maybe it’s like a mood ring on her head?” They both burst out laughing.

“Excuse me. Is there a problem back there?” Asked the Professor.

Before either of them could say anything they heard Sara’s clear voice behind them. “Professor, I think I heard them say something about hair color and then they just started cracking up.”

Mortified, Ronnie turned around to see Sara sitting very high and mighty, giving the professor a sympathetic shrug.

“Ronnie, Steve, is that true?” The whole class held its breath, and Ronnie caught Sara’s snide smile as she turned around to face the professor.

Ronnie stood up, and to the amazement of everyone she smiled, looked the professor straight in the eyes and said, “Yes Ma’am. It’s my fault. I asked Steve if he knew what caused your hair to change colors. I thought perhaps it was emotions since it seems to turn green when you are upset, uhhh… like right now,” hushed snickers echoed throughout the room. “But it turns pink when you’re happy…” She paused for a second looking sheepish. “The idea reminded me of a mood ring. I am really super sorry, but that idea caught me off guard and, I couldn’t keep it in! I meant no disrespect Professor Petunia, and if I might say so, I am really a huge fan of your hair!”

Before the professor could say anything the roots of her hair started to turn a slight pink.

“Oh and look!” Ronnie closed her eyes tight. A severe look of concentration, which could have been mistaken for pain, covered her face, and for a fleeting moment her jet black hair glimmered pink!

The whole room exploded in laughter and cheers.

“Did it work?” Ronnie exclaimed as she opened her eyes.

Now the professor’s hair was bright pink and she was laughing out loud with the rest of the class.

“Great job, Ronnie! You definitely have some metamorphic abilities in you!”

As the bell rang Ronnie had just enough time to return an astucious smile to Sara before she headed down to get some morphing tips from the professor.
