Chapter 4 - More about Doug and Potions Class (1)

“Hey Doug!” Ronnie waved as she walked into a dark room that was filled to the brim with dusty bottles leaking vials, and musty books all stacked and packed into floor to ceiling shelves that covered every inch of the cavernous space. Even the windows could only be identified by the light leaking through the colorful liquids.

“Hi Ronnie, good to see you again. Any new encounters of the winged kind?” he teased, as he made his way around an island piled high with small cages filled with weird squawking creatures inside.

“No, things have been quiet,” Ronnie chuckled. “I didn’t realize you were in this class.” She hesitated and went on. “Don’t take this the wrong way, but what are you doing in potions class? I mean you said you weren’t a wizard right?”

“Well, my mom is a professor here and since I will be spending most of my life in the wizarding world she thought I should know as much about it as possible. Sort of like you and the other witches and wizards having to take NEP classes.”

“Sure, that makes sense… But can you do potions?”

“I can make the potion, but I need a witch or a wizard to ignite the magic in it. I think my mom just wants me to help around the house.” Doug smiled with his good natured grin.

Ronnie spotted Steve from across the room. “Oh Steve!” She waved eagerly as he jockeyed his way around a gaggle of girls.

“Hi Ronnie,” Steve had finally stopped blushing every time he saw her and was getting used to the idea that she actually considered him a friend.

“I want you to meet Doug. He’s the kid who saved me from the hippogriffs!” She gave a dramatic Vanna White introduction with a tidy curtsy at the end.

Doug was quick to extend his hand with a smile. “Hi Steve, it’s great to meet you!”

Although Steve was normally very hesitant around new people Doug’s eagerness to be friends set him at ease. “Great to meet you too. Ronnie has told me a lot about you.”

“Oh dear.” Doug said with mock concern.

The three laughed and chatted as they navigated around the congested room, squeezing past other students to find a table together.
