As Steve and the rest of the class wondered out into the common room he could hear some of the boys talking about him.
"Dude - could he stutter anymore?" a red headed boy chuckled.
"Does he even know how to read?" an arrogant looking kid mocked.
"How about walking man? I mean really did he manage to knock every book onto the floor?" said a third boy.
A weasely boy sauntered up behind him and put a thin pale hand on Steve’s shoulder "I think you like that little green eyed Injun," he said with a snide grin.
"Shut up Matterson!" Steve hissed under his breath.
"Oh someone's a little protective of his stray cat," Jason Matterson was feeling braver as he caught sight of a few friends heading over. A few more choice words were passed between the boys and a few shoves were shared.
As the insults grew, more boys huddled around eager for a fight as the girls watched from the sidelines. Certainly no one was aware of Ronnie as she casually calculated the situation.
The dispute had grown and Ronnie saw a couple professors heading over to break it up. Which meant Steve was probably going to get into trouble since he was definitely at the center of the argument. With the odd casual air she always wore, she walked straight over to the group of boys.
Without saying a word she put her hand on the first boy’s shoulder, her leer took him by surprise and he quickly backed away. Merely stepping up towards the next boy had the same effect. Within a few seconds the crowd had receded and all that were left were Steve and Jason nose to nose, with fists clenched.
Having older brothers, Ronnie knew she needed to get Jason's gaze first so that Steve would not be caught off guard, and possibly be sucker punched by the little pale prick, so she paused. And as if on cue Jason spouted, “That hippy witch isn’t worth my spit” and with one quick step she was standing eye to eye with Jason, gaze locked. As he stammered and stuttered she caught Steve’s fist and ever so casually asked him to help her with her locker.
She carelessly started to lead Steve away. As everyone started to laugh, humiliation bubbled up in Jason’s eyes. Jason’s embarrassment quickly turned to furry as he lurched forward with a sucker punch, that to his dismay was blocked by the headmaster himself.
