Chapter 4 - More about Doug and Potions Class (3)

A short, stocky professor, with wild gray hair, entered the room. “Settle down class. Open your books to page 47. My name is Professor Brewster.”
The room erupted in a furry of flipping pages and banging books.
“All right… now who wants to read the first paragraph?” with the expected excitement of a new class, no one raised their hand and all eyes diverted simultaneously in the hopes of not being called on.

“Ronnie, why don’t you read the first few pages?”
There was a long pause as Ronnie tried to pull her eyes away from Professor Brutus. Finally after the pause became uncomfortable, she stood up and looked at her book for another long moment. To everyone’s surprise she looked back up and said, “well, I’d rather not”, and sat back down.
Everyone looked stunned, but before the professor knew what to do, Doug raised his hand and offered to read.
“Potions. Potions are the art of creating mixtures that have magical effects. Although many of the ingredients may be magical in nature, there are also many required ingredients that do not have any magical properties…” Doug continued to read until the professor stopped him.
“Doug, can you please re-read that last sentence?”
“Yes professor, ‘although creating potions is very similar and directly related to the non-magical form of Chemistry, its basis is founded in magic.’”
“Thank you Doug. Can you tell us what that means?” Professor Brewster asked.
“Yes sir, although a non-magical person may be able to create a ‘potion’ he or she will not be able to ‘ignite’ the magic in the potion without the assistance of a witch or wizard.” Doug answered with a smile.
“Very good Doug, thank you.” The professor nodded as Doug sat down.
The room burst forth in a clatter of whispers all associated with little fingers or head nods pointing in Doug’s direction. He just smiled and glanced over at Ronnie expecting to be greeted by her friendly green eyes. “Ronnie, what’s the matter?” he whispered as he looked into her washed out face. “Are you ok? Do you need to go to the nurse’s office?”
“No, Doug, I’m fine” She said as she glanced at him. She could see genuine concern. “Really I’m fine.”
As soon as class was dismissed Ronnie shot out the door.
“Ronnie, wait up! You forgot your book!” Doug called after her as he dodged students to catch up.
She stopped, but didn’t turn around. “Thanks Doug.” She snapped the book out of his hand and quickly disappeared into the crowd.
Doug turned to see Steve standing next to him. “What was that all about?”
“I don’t know.” Steve answered.
