“No, you can’t sit there! I’m saving both of those seats.” Two large boys were looking down at Steve menacingly.
Ronnie could see the commotion across the room as she waited in line. “You know, Steve is really a nice guy, but he sure doesn’t get the finer side of diplomacy.”
“Really?” a dreamy voice came back from a slight blonde girl standing behind her.
Ronnie looked back and chuckled, “Yes, really Stella.”
“He just seems so mysterious sometimes.” Stella mused.
“Yeah, I guess you could call it that.” She turned back to her hall mate “Hey, do you want to eat with us? Steve is bravely saving two seats and Doug just told me he was going to miss lunch.”
“Oh, really?” She caught her enthusiasm too late. “Yeah, I’d love to.” Both girls started laughing as they walked up to the table.
Of course, no boy likes the idea of two girls walking towards him laughing, but luckily Steve never even noticed.
“Hey, Steve, do you mind if Stella eats with us?” Ronnie knew Steve was worried about the chairs. “Doug just caught me in the hall and said he needed to skip lunch.”
“Oh, yeah, sure that’s fine with me. Hi Stella, have a seat.” Steve offered.
The conversation between Ronnie and Stella came easily and the conversation between Ronnie and Steve was easy too, but every time Stella and Steve tried to talk there seemed to be too many words and not enough story. Each time Ronnie jumped in to save the conversation, but soon she tired of the game and decided they would figure it out for themselves.
As she poked at her cold tater-tots she started to listen to her neighbor’s conversations hoping to find one which was more interesting than Steve and Stella’s.
She could hear three boys sitting next to them who were in deep conversation regarding their classes.
“So Professor Jackal said I needed to work on my spells before…”
Next to the boys, a group of older girls were gossiping about one of their classmates, “Susan is wearing the same sweater she wears every day.”
“I know! Did you notice the mustard stain on the sleeve?”
Across from them a very distraught NEP born boy was solemnly confiding in his friends, “My dad wants me to go to the Browns' game on Sunday…”
“You have to be kidding! You told him it was the screechball championships, didn’t you?”
Suddenly, a familiar voice cut through the dining hall rumble. “No Jason, I said mer-people,” Sara hissed.
Jason just shrugged “Sorry Sara, but I really don’t think there are any mer-people in that little pond.”
Now, this was an interesting conversation! She strained to hear more. “Well, my mother says there are. Are you calling her a liar?”
“Of course not!” Jason insisted.
Ronnie was barely aware of Steve and Stella, and was instead strained to catch more of Sara and Jason’s conversation. However, Sara had already caught herself and lowered her voice back to a low whisper.
