Chapter 8 - To the pond (3)

They all stood there looking at each other. “I don’t know, my mom, I guess… No wait! I remember Bethany, Bethany Murine, I mean Professor Murine. She and my mom are best friends, and she used to come over to our house and tell me stories by the fireplace all the time. Isn’t that how the story ends?”

“Well, I don’t know... I heard the goblet was lost when the Europeans invaded.” Ronnie pondered.

“When I was little my mom told me it was buried with the wizard that created it. I also read a story that said it was dropped in a volcano, but another story said it was lost at sea.” Steve paused. “I think I’ve heard a few other variations, but I never knew about it being used during the witch trials.”

“Ok, whatever, back to the story Steve, what did your mom tell you?” Doug prodded.

“Oh right. She said she thinks the goblet is here!”

“Where?”

“Here, at the school somewhere!”

“Why? I mean why does she think that? I’ve lived here my whole life and I’ve never heard anything about the goblet having any relation to the school.”

“No… but even you said Salem…” Slowly a grin stretched from ear to ear and his eyes glimmered. The only problem he was the only one who had caught his train of thought.

“Sorry Steve, but now I’m lost too.” Ronnie questioned.

“Salem! It could be Salem, Ohio! It’s just a few hours south of here, and if it was lost in Salem, then it would totally make sense that it somehow made it up here!”

“But, the Salem Witch Trials didn’t happen in Ohio.”

“Yeah, but that’s the funny thing about stories, people interpret them so they make sense to them. So someone may have said Salem, meaning Ohio, but someone else may have heard Salem, and assumed the witch trials in Massachusetts! Seriously, if I referred to Salem, would you think Ohio?”

“Massachusetts” they said together.

“So, my mom has been trying to figure out why Blake Arguson, came to this school. I mean, the kid’s got more money than the queen of England, his parents have connections with just about every major wizarding family in the world, and practically every major huff-n-puffer. So why would they send him to this tiny hole in the wall when they could easily send him to the finest schools in the world?” He paused to take a breath. “Nothing against this place, but seriously if you could send your kid to any magical school, why would you choose to send him here?”

“Well, my mom thinks there needs to be a significant reason why they would put their kid into this school. So she was having breakfast with some of her witchy friends and they got to gossiping. She asked them if they had heard anything. After a lengthy conversation she pulled enough details together to come up with the conclusion that the Goblet of Magic is somewhere here, on campus!”
