As Doug, Steve, and Ronnie were heading over to check on the water nymphs, they were busily eating chocolate covered lightning bugs. A tasty delight of crunchy insides with a rich chocolate covering that left your teeth glowing for hours.
“You know these remind me of inside-out M&Ms” Steve pondered “crunchy on the inside, chocolaty on the outside.”
“Hey, Doug?” Ronnie sighed.
“Yeah?” he replied absently.
“Do mer-people live in your pond?”
“What?” His quick reaction caused Ronnie and Steve to stop and stare. “Why?” This time he seemed almost confrontational, which thoroughly threw Ronnie off.
“Hey, Doug, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to upset you.”
“Why did you ask me that?”
“Really, I’m sorry. Never mind, it’s no big deal.”
“No, it is a big deal, why did you ask me that? What made you think there could possibly be mer-people in that pond?”
“Hey Doug, chill out, Ronnie didn’t mean anything by it. She just asked a question. Give her a break.” Ronnie was relieved to have Steve on her side.
Doug tried to regain his composure; he took a deep breath, and was visibly trying to control his emotions.
“Listen, no mer-people live in that pond. OK?” Doug said.
“Sure, OK.” Ronnie and Steve said in unison.
Without saying another word, Doug turned back to the trail and started walking quickly to the pond.
Steve and Ronnie struggled to keep up with him.
“Do you think he is trying to lose us?” Steve whispered to Ronnie as they were trying to determine which way to go.
“No” she whispered as she pointed to Doug up the smaller of the two trails. “He’s making sure we can follow him. But he is really torked about something.”
