A mousy professor stood at the front of the room trying to keep the attention of her students. “The culture of the Great Lakes water nymphs varies dramatically from even the cultures of local ponds, rivers, and tributaries. In global terms, the Great Lakes are very near to our waterways, however, in terms of water nymphs there is no way for the Great Lakes nymph’s culture to venture up stream.”
Uncontrollable snorts from a horsey little girl in the back of the room quickly distracted the class. As whispers turned to laughter and the snorts became indecent, the entire room lost focus on the tiny little professor. Everyone’s attention was on the back of the room.
Though most of the students were longingly looking to see what was so funny, and hopeful to be part of the joke, there were a few expressions which did not mirror them. Doug was the most annoyed. Because not only did he feel Sara was being blatantly disrespectful of Professor Murine, whom he had known for years, but Magical and Mythical Cultures was also one of his very favorite subjects, and she was completely ruining the class.
Ronnie could tell Doug was really agitated but wasn’t sure why, because even though she didn’t like what Sara was doing, there was a part of her that was happy for the distraction from the dull lecture. However, unlike Doug or Steve, who just kept their eyes lowered, Ronnie liked taking matters into her own hands. So she stood up, deviously making her chair screech across the floor with such a hair raising result that the whole room went silent and all eyes were on her.
“Sorry, Professor Murine,” she said with a smile “would you mind if I got a drink of water?”
“I don’t mind, Ronnie that would be fine.”
“Thank you.” Ronnie smiled at the professor and in one fluid movement cast the same triumphant grin at Sara as she casually left the now silenced room.
