Chapter 2 - First Day of School (2)

The driveway opens up onto a grand pond with walkways and sitting areas already crowded with returning students. There was also an eclectic collection of building scattered around, some were tiny, like a little mushroom-shaped structure tucked under a weeping willow. Other buildings were on a much larger scale, some were ancient and classic looking, whereas others were modern, there were still others that defied gravity or reason. The winding road forked and looped leading into the immense woods that surrounded everything.

“I had no idea the campus was this big.” Steven said in a whisper.

“Me neither.” His mom admitted as she slowly pulled forward. “Look at that pond, it’s gorgeous,” she said with a sigh as they started to follow the twisted road that led towards the main building.

“Steve, I am really sorry you had to miss orientation… It just I… well you understand… It’s not that…”

“Look at that!” Steve ignored his mom’s awkward apology and leaned forward to point at a strange building that seemed to be covered with glistening scales. “I bet that is one of Gehry’s structures! I read that he is the only wizard allowed to use real dragon scales on his buildings.”

His mom smiled, glad to see the excitement back in her son’s eyes. “Wow!” She said as they slowly pulled up to the main building, “I’ve seen pictures of this, but never imagined it was so…” her voice trailed off as they both stared at a gigantic glass dome structure that reached fifty feet into the air. In the center of the dome was an ancient-looking cylindrical sandstone tower that extended all the way through the top of the glass.

“This is the tower of cultural magic...” Steve paused with reverence as a smile spread across his face. “I will be spending a lot of time here.” Inadvertently he reached for the old medallion that hung around his neck; his fingers traced the symbols that represented the many lineages of magic that had assembled in the United States.

Four massive industrial looking steel wings arched out from the base of the inner building, passed through the sides of the dome, and soared into the sky. “What is that?” Steve’s mom asked as she pointed to the closest wing. It looked as though it was filled with a blazing fire.

“Each arm represents one of the four elements,” Steve recites matter-of-factly. “This one’s fire. There’s a spell placed on each one that keeps the element in its natural state. That one…” Steve points to another wing, “is water… that’s air, and earth must be on the other side.” Learning everything he could is what got Steve up early in the morning and kept him up late at night, he was an excellent student.

“Wow… look at that! The glass is changing color!” Steve’s mom laughed as they continued under the water wing and followed the winding road.
