Chapter 1 – Grazing on ground hogs (4)

With the danger averted, Headmaster Lombardi calmly turned to Professor Wishford “Professor, please ensure these first-years are returned safely to the main hall for lunch.”

“Yes, Headmaster Lombardi,” Professor Wishford answered.

“Also, please be sure Professor Funkly gets to the infirmary for a good once-over with nurse Pritts.” He placed his hand on the trembling professor recalling a similar incident that happened to him when he was a young professor. “Now don’t you worry, we all learned something today,” and with a reassuring smile placed him in the care of professor Wishford.

“Yes, Headmaster,” Professor Funkly managed to mutter.

With a sly grin the headmaster walked out to the pasture, pondering how he should handle the careless first year. Finally he decided to put on his best disciplinarian facade.

“Young Mister Douglas,” the headmaster addressed the boy sternly. “Why, pray tell, is this fledgling witch still in harm’s way?”

“Oh no, Sir!” Ronnie jumped in. “Doug rescued me!”

“Then why, Miss, are you still standing in front of this monstrous brute of an animal that has tried so viciously attacked you?” the headmaster asked, winking at Doug.

“Oh no, Sir!” This time the headmaster could see true concern in her eyes. “It wasn’t Arnold’s fault!”

With another quick wink to Doug, he asked in mock confusion, “Now who is Arnold?”

“Oh sir, this is Arnold!” Ronnie’s voice shook and her hand trembled as she stroked the shimmering creature. “It’s all my fault sir! It’s not his fault and the professor was just trying to protect me.”

With a wide grin, the headmaster put a hand on the young girl’s shoulder. “It’s okay, Miss Ronnie. I am sure it was no one’s fault, however, I must stress, you may not approach the mythical creatures unattended.” He paused letting his words sink in.

“Yes sir.” She replied, sticking her hand in her pocket.

“In fact, I am confident our mutual friend Douglass will be able to tell us exactly what happened and why.” The professor continued.

“Yes sir, I think I can.” Doug answered.
